Attention part-timers! The first receipts for our Attention part-timers! The first receipts for our improved and expanded PT healthcare reimbursement are *due September 30th* You won’t have another chance to submit July through September premium receipts for reimbursement up to $913.74 a month. See the link tree in our bio to find out more on how to submit and to join a webinar your union will host this Tuesday on getting the new PT healthcare reimbursement
Victory!!! Thanks to your organizing, AFT was able Victory!!! Thanks to your organizing, AFT was able to get the District to significantly increase the PT healthcare reimbursement, with the Spring 2024 max reimbursement of $6128 almost **double** the previous max amount of $3305. AND we expanded eligibility: part-timers with a total load of 40% between multiple community college districts can now be reimbursed a portion of their costs by SMCCCD based on how many districts they work in. PLUS we expect even bigger improvements at the end of this one-year agreement. Stay tuned for more on logistics. When we fight, we win! ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻
Despite recent HUGE progress on part-time healthca Despite recent HUGE progress on part-time healthcare, our District has indicated it may call for impasse. Why is that and what does it mean? See these slides and then attend our Sept. 13th membership meeting to discuss our way forward
SMCCCD faculty: we need your perspective on propos SMCCCD faculty: we need your perspective on proposals currently on the table for our next contract. Join our forum on District Flex Day (Monday): 1-2:30 pm in CSM Bldg 10 Rm 195 or on Zoom (you must register beforehand; use the link in our bio or stories). See you at the forum!
Over the past twelve years our District’s genera Over the past twelve years our District’s general fund revenues have increased by over 100%—but full-time faculty salaries have only increased by 30%! Our working conditions are our students’ learning conditions. So why aren’t faculty needs a priority for our District? 🤔
AFT’s negotiating team and SMCCCD negotiators ha AFT’s negotiating team and SMCCCD negotiators have been in confidential mediation since January. Mediation concluded without an agreement on Friday; after this, the District sent its first public post-mediation proposals. Read more about the District proposals at the link in our bio and our stories. We look forward to continuing to work together to secure a strong contract for all ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏼✊🏼✊🏻
Action Update #6: Dual Enrollment. Next year, SMCC Action Update #6: Dual Enrollment. Next year, SMCCCD admin want to double the size of dual enrollment, where college courses are taught to high school students. AFT has proposed that our faculty should have the choice to opt in to dual enrollment teaching—but the District has consistently refused
@aft_1493 members were in LA this week for union t @aft_1493 members were in LA this week for union training, so of course we had to stop by the @wgastrikeunite picket line to show our support for striking writers! Let’s be honest—good TV and movies got so many of us through hard years of teaching and AI just isn’t going to produce the humor or human stories that talented writers do. Studios need to pay these workers what they’re worth ✏️✊🏿✊🏽✊🏾✊🏼✊🏻
SMCCCD pays part-time faculty only 71 to 77% of wh SMCCCD pays part-time faculty only 71 to 77% of what they pay full-timers for the same work. Our district relies on all faculty, including part-timers, to make their equity goals a reality. To support student equity SMCCCD must pay part-timers fairly ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻
SMCCCD does not currently offer *any* fully paid p SMCCCD does not currently offer *any* fully paid parental leave to faculty. That means faculty who welcome a new child can only maintain their regular income if they have enough sick days to cover the entire time they are out. By agreeing to AFT’s proposal for a month of fully paid parental leave, the District can advance gender equity, make faculty work more accessible, and show all parents in our community (including student parents) that it values their work as caregivers ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻
MemberVoice Action Update 3: Disability Accommodat MemberVoice Action Update 3: Disability Accommodations. Faculty with disabilities just want to support our students. Too often, however, faculty struggle with unnecessary and unexplained delays in getting the accommodations we need to continue working. SMCCCD must offer faculty a clear, transparent, timely process for obtaining reasonable accommodations. Disability rights are civil rights! ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻
Thanks to $200 million in ongoing funding from the Thanks to $200 million in ongoing funding from the state, our District can get reimbursed up to 100% of its costs for providing adjunct faculty with quality healthcare. Yet SMCCCD still refuses to offer adjuncts—who are 55% of our faculty—the care they need. When faculty have quality care, everyone benefits! It’s time for SMCCCD to do the right thing and give adjuncts the healthcare they deserve
Faculty must have a fair contract so we can focus Faculty must have a fair contract so we can focus on serving our students! At our District’s final Board meeting of the academic year, faculty reps presented Chancellor Moreno and the Trustees with more than 1000 signatures calling for the District to provide faculty with fair wages and healthcare access. Our scroll of signatures was 20 feet long! Thanks to the @sanmateodailyjournal for covering it, and to everyone who signed to support us. Link to article in bio ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻
AFT MemberVoice Action Update 1: Compensation. Did AFT MemberVoice Action Update 1: Compensation. Did you know administrators in our District are paid *double* what faculty make, while a similar neighboring district pays admin only 1.5 times as much as faculty? Our faculty are struggling to pay rent and keep up with inflation. It’s time for the San Mateo Community College District to give equitable raises to our teachers, counselors, librarians, coaches, and nurses
