REVIEW OF “TO DO” LIST FROM THE 2004 AFT RETREAT

Goals not met:

AFT contact person for every division.

AFT Poster.

AFT workshop.

Photos of campus representatives.

Activities for Campus Equity Week in 2004.

Goals met:

Campus meetings.

Holding a mid-year retreat.

Voter registration drives.

A special spring meeting to promote leadership skills.

Recommendations:

Contact faculty about getting involved in the union. This includes access through e-mail and personal contact.

Sponsor an AFT poster contest with a $100 prize.

Establish a stronger AFT presence such has holding social events, and establishing a system for recruiting and mentoring. Other ideas include a “meet your reps” meeting and other projects to involve new members.

AFT needs to establish a more collaborative presence with the Academic Senates. This may include  holding a joint social event.

We need to get Canada more involved through holding an open meeting, attending Academic Senate meetings, and establishing more personal contacts.

New faculty packet needs to be followed up by personal contact.

Recommended were parties for newly tenured faculty.

Continued evaluation of EC meetings, including keeping the focus on one issue. Perhaps have one extra meeting in the Spring.

In October, we will be working on the dues restructuring campaign.

PROPOSAL OF ISSUES FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR:

Contract Negotiations - The EC wants to concentrate on 3 things for the next round of negotiations: 1) Salary, including part-time office hours, 2) benefits, and 3) a third item which will be decided through a survey presented to the district wide faculty. Possible suggestions for the third item includes the coordination of ESOL programs and the class load issue. Part of this survey will also include preferences for when Spring Break should be scheduled.

Part Time Office Hours Campaign - The EC discussed ways to mobilize instructors to support the campaign. Some suggestions include: 1) Increase awareness among full time faculty through forums and education. This includes making full timers aware that part-time equity is in everyone’s self-interest.  2) After each negotiation, establish a long term plan so that we all know what issues will be presented in the forthcoming negotiation. 3) Increase part-timer awareness in order to make them active in the campaign. 4) Focus on the issue with board members and potential board members. 5) Encourage the press to write of this issue, thereby increasing public awareness. 6) Write an article for The Advocate. 7) Have campus coordinators announce and discuss part-timer office hours at division meetings.

Special Election - Campus coordinators will be meeting to discuss defeat strategies for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s propositions in the upcoming election.

Work Plan - Ernie Rodriguez and Yaping Li presented the draft of the 2005-2006 work plan. The EC went through and marked off which items have been accomplished. It was suggested that items in the work plan be consolidated and presented again at a later meeting.
