March and Rally for California's Future on April 21st
Last
March, California saw a flurry of activism. Thousands rallied in
support of public education through marches, teach-ins, voter
registration efforts, and more. The momentum continues in the
CFT-sponsored "March for California's Future," which involves
a broad coalition of labor, education, community, business, and faith
groups, marching from Bakersfied to
Sacramento. A core group of marchers has taken the route through
central California that Caesar Chavez took in his '60s Delano march to
Sacramento. Along the route, individuals from various coalitions have
joined the core group of marchers and stopped in key cities to register
voters, collect signatures for ballot measures, hold rallies, and make their voices heard. "March for California's
Future" started on March 5th and is scheduled to end at the State
Capitol with a rally of thousands on April 21st at around 4:00 p.m.
If
you'd like to participate in the last leg of this march and attend the
rally, call the AFT 1493 office (x6491) as soon as possible to see about car-pooling
or financial assistance to take the train to Sacramento. The
event schedule is below.
2:30
p.m. - Gather at Southside Park, 2115 6th St, Sacramento, CA 95818
3 p.m. - March
to the CA State Capitol Building
4 p.m. - Rally
at State Capitol
Visit the
"March for California's Future" website at http://www.fight4cafuture.com)
to see who's marching and who's offered their support. The website also
allows you to see and hear the marchers through streaming video. The
most inspiring and powerful aspect of this march is that so many
different groups/organizations are participating, not just teachers.
This 250+ mile effort is just one more way we have kept up our fight
for public education and services. Let's send yet another message to
Sacramento on April 21 and be a part of an historic moment.
Support Still
Needed for Binding Arbitration
Recently, AFT 1493 announced an online
petition to support a change in our faculty contract from “advisory” arbitration (which allows our
Board of Trustees to decide whether or not to accept a decision of a
professional arbitrator) to “binding” arbitration, which requires that
arbitrators’ decisions are actually implemented by the District administration.
Binding arbitration is standard contract language in the overwhelming
majority of California community college districts that are represented
by AFT. Our neighboring districts, Foothill-DeAnza,
San Francisco, Marin, Peralta, Chabot-Las Positas,
San Jose-Evergreen and Contra Costa, all have binding arbitration.
Skyline employs just over 375
part-time and full-time faculty combined. However, only about 71 total
faculty members from Skyline have signed AFT 1493's petition in support
of binding arbitration. Suprisingly, only 45 out of 103 full-timers have signed! It's time
to revisit what the absence of binding arbitration could mean to full
and part-time faculty. Without binding arbitration both full-timers'
and part-timers' contractual rights will continue to be at risk. Any of us, regardless of our
employment status, could have something to lose!
If
you still haven't signed the petition because you're not sure about
what binding
arbitration
means to you, read more about it by clicking
here or by contacting a Skyline AFT Chapter
Co-Chair or any other AFT
1493 officer. Show the District how you feel by signing the
online
petition.
We need all faculty to stand behind this change!
AFT Executive Committee Endorses Parcel Tax
After a long
discussion at its March meeting, the AFT 1493 Executive Committee voted
to endorse Measure G, the parcel tax the District is placing on the
upcoming June 2010 ballot. If passed, the tax would raise approximately
6 million dollars over a 4 year period and would cost homeowners $34
per percel. Residents over 65 would be exempt
from the tax; funds may be applied to running any aspect of the
colleges; and no funds would go towards administrator salaries.
Nominations for AFT Officers Due
May 10th; Ballots Due May 31
If
you've been wanting to play a more active role in our union and in
advocating for faculty rights, or if you know of a fellow faculty
member who'd like to do so, nominate yourself or that colleague for a
position as an AFT 1493 officer. The 2 year
term of office begins on June 1, 2010. Nomination
forms for AFT officers were mailed out April 15 and should be available
in your campus mailboxes within the next few days. Forms must
be returned to the AFT office at CSM (17-131) by Monday, May 10.
Nominations may also be made at the AFT meeting at Skyline (5-131) on
Wednesday, May 12. Feel free to contact any
current members of our Executive
Committee for more information about AFT officers'
responsibilities.
The
official AFT 1493 ballot will be sent out to all AFT members on Friday,
May 14. Ballots must be returned to the AFT office at CSM (17-131) by Monday,
May 31.
