San Mateo Community College Federation of Teachers, AFT 1493

Minutes of Executive Committee
of May 24, 2002

Present: George Goth, Victoria Clinton, Dan Kaplan,Katharine Harer, Romy Thiele, John Searle, Beth Chandler, Nina Floro, Anne Nichols, Karen Olesen, Joaquin Rivera, Ernie Rodriguez

Guest:: Kate Motoyama

The meeting began at 12:40 pm

Joaquin Rivera and Katharine Harer stated that at a long negotiation

session on May 17, a tentative agreement had been reached. The union and

the administration negotiators agree, the chancellor seems to be on

board but the Board's position is unclear. The Chancellor may have

exceeded his parameters. We have not heard in the last week anything

about him getting the board to move. The Board meets next Wednesday and

we will find out then.

The agreement is as follows

Full timers: 7-3-3

Hourly schedule split, full time overload 7-3-3

Part timers: 1st year - 10.2 % equity money as bonus; 2nd year - 13.07%

(starting in August); 3rd year - 7.0%. This corresponds to the 20.7%

over three years that we were asking for, although not as front ended as

we would have liked.

Medical benefits - no movement, still 9-3-3. We have to make clear in

the information provided at the vote the implication of this.

Sabbaticals - 50K from professional development; 50K extra; restarts

academic year 2003/4

Counseling - keep on talking

PT Office hours - discussed under parity

The package was unanimously accepted by the Exec Committee.

Kate Motoyama said that what will happen with flex is really up in the

air. Apparently Wednesday will be district and college focused; Thursday

will be orientation for new faculty and Friday is on your own. She also

said that the district senate has spoken to an attorney about their

concernts over the hiring process for the chancellor.

Ernie Rodriguez stated that the chancellor will meet with those faculty

who signed a petition citing the hostile work envirnoment at Canada.

Katharine Harer said we should organize a flex activity for the first

Friday to focus on consolidation and planning. It was decided that it

would be one half day and off campus. She is looking for assistance in

planning this.
