NON AGENDA ITEMS
A flyer was passed out announcing a solidarity rally in support of the hotel workers on Saturday, November 20 at 11:00 in Union Square.
CO PRESIDENTS REPORT AND NEGOTIATIONS - JOAQUIN RIVERA
The health care survey was supposed to be run by all the unions for approval but was released prematurely and had to be withdrawn. Rick Hough volunteered to be a Health Benefits specialist.
No negotiations have been held since our last EC meeting. Next negotiation meeting will be on November 29.
Policy on class size hasn't been established yet. John Kirk opined that paying extra for incremental increases in class size should not be the way to go. Teachers very rarely overload their classes. There are some cases of instructors teaching students at several skill levels in one class which means doing several preps for one class. We may discuss issues concerning multi-level classes at a later date.
Very few classes have been brought back and enrollment continues
to fall. Our district cut 541 sections and has brought back only 35
sections.
PART TIMERS REPORT - JENNY SAARLOOS
AFT members are speaking in front of the board of trustees tonight November 17, on the need for part timers to be paid for office hours. Jenny Saarloos will write an article on the presentation for the Advocate.
Jenny Saarloos went to a part-timers rights workshop in San Jose. Participants got a list of phone numbers to arrange future meetings. Attendees would like to continue meetings to discuss what rights are available and what the union has to offer.
Pay for office hours is a major issue among part-timers. More part-timers responded to the Advocate's discussion question regarding pay for office hours than any previous discussion question.
JOHN KIRK - GRIEVANCE
There are no formal grievances. One part-timer's wages were garnished for the IRS which resulted in a very small paycheck.
People are not aware that we are covered by workers comp. If the claim is accepted, employees will receive payment for related injury. They should not get sick leave deducted when they go in for treatment.
BUDGET REPORT - JOHN KIRK
John distributed a Resource Allocation Proposal drawn up by the District Committee on Budget and Finance which will be sent to the District Shared Governance Council. The proposal listed 5 components for funding, most of which included support for administration, college support services and facilities development. The EC expressed concern that funding for employee raises is not included in the allocation model proposal.
KCSM receives 1 million dollars from the district to add to their 5 million dollars earned from pledge drives. They district gets a lot for their contribution: telecourses which bring in a lot of money, plus the station plugs activities at the colleges for free.
John also distributed a handout taken from the contract which shows that nowhere in the contract are part-time faculty required to hold office hours.
DISTRICT SHARED GOVERNANCE - DAN KAPLAN REPORTING FOR KATHARINE
HARER
A second draft of the mutual respect policy language was distributed for review. The overall opinion was that much of the policy covered was already in place and a lot of the language was still vague.
CAMPUS REPORT
Rick Hough wondered if there could there be more communication in regards to negotiations, perhaps a campus wide meeting or "blue sheet" to inform the faculty/staff what is happening.
Meeting was adjourned at 4:15
Respectfully submitted
